There are days that call for a blazer and days that call for a hood and a cup of tea. Women's hoodies belong to the second kind: Saturday errands, a walk with the dog, a long train journey or a quiet Sunday with the papers. The ones here are a good deal smarter than the faded one you have had since university, and you will not mind bumping into a neighbour at the shops in them.

Zip-up hoodies open as you warm up, while pullover styles come with a drawstring hood and a front pocket. A longline cut gives a longer line over leggings, a shawl-collar design softens the neckline, and a few matching lounge sets with joggers or wide trousers complete the picture for slow days. Black, grey and green sit alongside blue, white and soft pink, so you can go quiet or cheerful as the mood takes you. Most styles go up to at least 3XL, and the front pocket is handy for cold hands on a winter walk.

Women's hoodies mix with almost anything casual. A zip-up over a plain top and jeans is ready for the weekend, a pullover over leggings suits a brisk walk, and a lounge set kept together is ideal for travel days. On a long journey, a zip-up is the easiest layer to shrug off once the train heats up.
