Smart Casual for Women: What It Actually Means
Written by Artemis Clo
It turns up on office emails, restaurant websites and wedding invitations, and almost nobody explains it. Here is the smart casual dress code for women in plain terms, with a formula you can rely on and outfit ideas for the places it appears most.
What the smart casual dress code means for women
So, what is smart casual? It sits between the suit and the sofa. You look as though you made an effort, but you are not dressed for a board meeting or a black tie dinner. In practice it means no gym kit, nothing too revealing and nothing too formal, with plenty of room for your own style in between.
The trouble is that it shifts with the setting. Smart casual at a seaside café is not the same as smart casual at a London restaurant or a corporate away day. The safest approach is to look at where you are going and who else will be there, then aim for the middle of that room.
The single most useful piece for this dress code is a good jacket. It turns jeans into an outfit and a simple dress into something polished. A relaxed check blazer with patch pockets is easy to wear, and our blazers collection has both tailored and softer shapes.

The formula: one smart piece, one relaxed piece
If you remember nothing else, remember this. Smart casual is one part smart, one part casual, and the outfit is the conversation between them. A few smart casual outfit ideas that follow the rule:
- A tailored jacket with dark jeans and a simple top.
- A crisp shirt with relaxed wide-leg trousers.
- A fine knit jumper with straight trousers and loafers.
- A knit or shirt dress with a cardigan and ankle boots.
For the trousers, a straight leg or a wide leg both work well. Straight-leg summer trousers with turn-ups look neat with a shirt, and there are more cuts in our trousers collection. On top, a shirt with an interesting collar is just the right side of smart, and the tops and shirts range has prints and plains to mix in.
What tips an outfit out of smart casual? On the casual side: sportswear, flip-flops, faded or heavily ripped denim and anything with a slogan. On the smart side: a matching suit with a formal shirt, very high heels or full evening sparkle in daylight. Keep one foot in each camp and you will rarely go wrong.
If you build your wardrobe around this formula, everything starts to work together. Our guide to a capsule wardrobe that works after 40 takes the idea further.
Shoes that fit the brief
Smart casual shoes are where many outfits are won or lost. Too formal and you look as though you are off to court; too casual and the whole thing slides into weekend.
Loafers are the classic answer, smart enough for an office and relaxed enough for lunch. Colour-block penny loafers with a low heel add a bit of personality. Ankle boots, low block heels, ballet flats and clean minimal trainers all fit too. Browse our shoes with the occasion in mind: the more formal the setting, the sleeker the shoe.
The smart casual dress code at work, dinner and weddings
Smart casual for work leans to the smart end. Tailored trousers or a neat skirt, a blouse or fine knit and a jacket on the back of your chair. Jeans may be fine on some days and in some offices, but take your lead from colleagues. If you are dressing for a first meeting, our notes on what to wear to a job interview will help.

A smart casual dinner outfit can relax a little and sparkle a little more. Dark jeans or wide trousers with a silky-look top and a jacket, or a simple dress with earrings and smart boots.
At a wedding, smart casual means one step below lounge suit, not three. A pretty midi dress, a trouser suit or an elegant co-ord all fit. Our guide to wedding dress codes explained sets out every level on the scale.
Whichever room you are walking into, the test is simple: would you feel comfortable if someone took your photograph, and comfortable if you had to stay for three more hours? If the answer to both is yes, you have got smart casual exactly right.

Your questions, answered
Are jeans smart casual?
Usually, yes, as long as they are clean, dark or mid-blue and without heavy rips. Pair them with a structured jacket and smart shoes and they sit comfortably within most smart casual settings. A formal office may still prefer trousers, so take your cue from colleagues.
Are trainers acceptable for smart casual?
Clean, minimal trainers in leather-look white, black or a neutral are widely accepted now, especially with tailoring. Chunky running trainers and anything that looks like gym kit are better kept for the weekend.
Is a dress smart casual?
A simple day dress is one of the easiest smart casual outfits there is. Knit, shirt and wrap dresses all work, and a jacket or cardigan over the top adds the smart half of the equation.
What is the difference between smart casual and business casual?
Business casual leans a little more formal and is mostly used for offices: tailored trousers, blouses and jackets, with jeans less likely. Smart casual is broader and is used for restaurants, parties and some weddings as well as work.
